Bringing a legendary band’s brand to life with custom design inside a scalable system

Challenge

Relaunch the official ecommerce store for The Monkees, a legendary band with a dedicated fanbase and a recognizable visual identity. The store needed to feel era-appropriate and true to the brand while also aligning with modern usability standards and the Shopify-based pattern library I developed for scalable artist storefronts.

My Approach

I led the end-to-end creative direction for the new store, balancing vintage aesthetics with functional ecommerce design. I designed every aspect of the site, from layout to typography to graphic treatments, using the Shopify pattern library I had previously built for enterprise-scale rollout.

Working within that system, I customized components to reflect The Monkees’ unique look and feel, ensuring the store felt tailored and not templated. I also produced all digital assets, collaborated directly with developers for implementation, and QA’d across device types to ensure a seamless and responsive experience.

Result

The resulting webstore delivered a playful, retro-inspired interface that honors the band’s legacy while providing a clean, mobile-first shopping experience for longtime fans. Despite using scalable system patterns, the final site feels entirely bespoke, demonstrating how the design system can adapt to diverse artist brands while accelerating time to launch.

Lessons Learned
